Posh U21s v Brentford B

Posh U21s suffer defeat in the Premier League Cup.

Peterborough United U21s were knocked out of the Premier League Cup on Monday afternoon following a 2-0 defeat to Brentford B at the Weston Homes Stadium, leaving them five points behind second-place with just one game left to play.

Brentford had an early opportunity as J’Neil Bennett fizzed a low ball across the face of the goal, but Michael Olakigbe failed to make a connection at the back-post. Aaron Pressley was then gifted possession inside the box following a slip from Emmanuel Fernandez, but his effort was weak.

Posh created their first chance on 25 minutes as Roddy McGlinchey played a defence-splitting pass into Joe Taylor and he looked to round the keeper, however, the Trialist did well to collect the ball from his feet. Taylor struck the woodwork moments later as Tomlinson’s ball set the forward through on-goal and he poked the ball past the keeper, but the angle became tight and saw his effort hit the post.

Kai Corbett then took aim from distance, forcing the Trialist keeper to tip the ball over the crossbar, and from the resulting corner, Taylor was found completely free at the front post, but sent his header over the bar.

Posh continued to pile on the pressure in the closing stages of the first half as McGlinchey’s pass set Jonson Gyamfi through and his dinked effort over the keeper just fell beyond the far post.

After a quiet start to the second half, it was Brentford who broke the deadlock on 57 minutes as Angel Waruih's pass found Pressley inside the box and he slotted the ball under Lakin. The visitors extended their advantage just two minutes later as Edon Pruti rose the highest from a corner and guided his header into the back of the net.

The visitors looked to further extend their advantage on 78 minutes as Isaac Holland’s low cross found J’Neil Bennett inside the box, who sent his effort well over the bar. Corbett then saw his 25-yard free-kick pushed over the bar by the Trialist keeper.

Posh searched for a way back into the game in the final few minutes as McGlinchey played the ball into Corbett, who worked the ball onto his right foot and his effort was comfortable for The Bees’ keeper.
