Kelland Watts

Posh have strengthened their defensive options with the signing of Newcastle United defender Kelland Watts in loan deal until January

Peterborough United have strengthened their defensive options ahead of the transfer deadline with the arrival of centre back Kelland Watts on a loan deal from Premier League side Newcastle United.

The 22-year-old made 34 appearances in Sky Bet League One last term with Wigan Athletic, helping the Latics to promotion to the Championship and made 49 appearances for Plymouth Argyle at the same level the year before.

Watts has made one senior appearance for Newcastle as a substitute in the Premier League and has also represented the club in the EFL Trophy. Manager Grant McCann explained his reasoning for securing the signing of the left-sided centre back but confirmed he won’t feature for a short while due to injury.

“I am delighted to get Kelland. He won the league with Wigan Athletic last season at this level, he is 6ft 4, strong in the air and comfortable on the ball and is a left-sided centre back, so I am pleased we have managed to get it over the line. He has a really good pedigree and is an excellent defender.

“The only downside to it is that he is currently injured, it might take him three or four weeks to get back and available for selection, but we wanted to wait for him. We had other options that we were exploring, but he was top of the list and we were prepared to wait because of how good a player he is.”

Watts completed the paperwork in Newcastle and an interview with the new signing will be available soon.
