Tony Godden

The Football Club are saddened to learn of the death of former player and Goalkeeping Coach Tony Godden.

Peterborough United Director of Football Barry Fry has paid tribute to Tony Godden, who has sadly passed away at the age of 70,

Godden made 24 appearances as a player at the Weston Homes Stadium before linking up with Fry as Goalkeeping Coach.

"I have just heard the news that Tony has passed away. He was my Goalkeeping Coach for a number of years. Not only was he a great coach, he was also a perfect gentleman.

"Everybody loved him, he helped anyone whenever he could. I know Ron Atkinson very well and he had Tony at West Bromwich Albion where he played over 300 games for the Baggies. Ron loved him, I know that, but then everybody did.

"It has come completely out of the blue, my love goes to his family and friends at this sad time. This is a devastating blow for all of us, but he will be remembered very fondly as a player and as a coach, and as a man, he was different class," Fry said.

Director Liz Elsom said: “I am extremely saddened to hear of the passing of Tony Godden. As a West Bromwich Albion supporter, he was a brilliant goalkeeper for the Baggies and I will always remember when he joined Peterborough United as a Goalkeeping Coach because he was a legend to me. He was a really kind, generous man and my condolences go to his friends and family at this incredibly sad time.“

Godden spent a season as a player with Chelsea and also had spells at Luton Town, Birmingham City and Walsall.

Our thoughts are with Tony's family and friends at this sad time.
