Kurtis Simmons

A Posh Under 21 side made up of trialists and Under 18s were beaten 3-2 by Wellingborough in the Hillier Cup final on Tuesday night.

The Peterborough United Under 21s concluded their campaign with the Hillier Cup final at Sileby Rangers as several first year scholars and a host of trialists pushed a Step 4 side all the way, but a dominant first half display ultimately secured the silverware for the Doughboys.

The regular Posh side were in action against Nottingham Forest on Bank Holiday Monday and despite attempts to move the final to later in the week, the game had to take place 24 hours later.

Wellingborough were in control for the first 45 minutes with only a breakaway chance for Kurtis Simmons, which went wide, causing problems for the experienced back-line.

Goalkeeper George Bucknor made a couple of decent stops, but a goal from a set-piece and two clinical finishes put Wellingborough in control at the interval.

A couple of changes in the second half helped Posh wrestle some control and they pulled a goal back when SIMMONS tapped home from close-range after Benji McWilliams-Marcano saw his effort deflected onto the underside of the bar.

Two minutes later, Posh got another as a foul on one of the trialists was punished by the referee and SIMMONS slotted home from 12-yards.

At this stage in the contest, Wellingborough were struggling to contain Posh with plenty of pressure applied but aside from a couple of efforts that went wide, Posh were unable to force the goalkeeper into many saves.

Wellingborough were reduced to 10-men late on when a wild challenge in the middle of the park was rightly punished by the referee.
