Lucca Mendonca signing his new contract

Defender Lucca Mendonca has put pen to paper on a new four-year contract.

Peterborough United are delighted to announce that Lucca Mendonca has agreed a new long-term contract with the Football Club.

The 18-year-old, who made his first league start for the club in the fixture with Stevenage earlier this season, putting in an excellent performance after after only finding out he was in the XI shortly before kick-off due to illness in the squad, completed the paperwork at the Bespoke Builds Training Ground.

The teenager believes the club is the perfect place to continue his development: "I am really happy to commit my future to the club, I believe that I am in the right place to continue my development.

"At the start of the season, my aim was to make my first start for the club and I have featured in seven games in all competitions, so I am happy that I have managed to do that and also play regularly for the Under 21s.

"The Under 21s has been really enjoyable because I am being tested by different types of players and opposition. I remember coming up against Igor Thiago when we played Brentford and he is obviously now scoring lots of goals in the first team and playing for Brazil, so you do get really big players playing in those games sometimes.

"It would be great to get some minutes in the first team before the end of the season and then I will go away, work hard during the summer and come back and challenge for a place in the team, that is my aim."

Mendonca made his first appearance of the season as a substitute in the Carabao Cup tie at Accrington Stanley in August before going on to feature in all three Vertu Trophy group phase fixtures.
