Lucca Mendonca

We are pleased to confirm that Lucca Mendonca has penned his first professional contract at the football club.

Mendonca (17) completed the formalities at the Weston Homes Stadium this week and will continue his development within the Professional Development Phase of the Academy.

The defender, who can operate as a centre back or a right-back, was named on the substitutes bench for the Emirates FA Cup tie at Newport County last season.

He would become the first Brazilian to ever play for Posh should he make his debut and Academy Director Dan Robinson is delighted with his progress.

"We brought Lucca in through a contact of Jimmy Unwin and he had a trial with us, did very well within the Under 16 age group and within a year, he has done very well.

"He is a player who has had an early professional contract offer and that is because we want to give him time to develop, we value him and his journey.

"He is versatile, he can play in numerous positions across the back, he actually joined us as a midfield player and has had opportunities with the first team already, both on a match day and also regular training sessions. He is a player that we are looking forward to seeing him develop."

Mendonca was within the Academy systems at Southampton and Arsenal, but was unable to sign due to work permit challenges, but now they are resolved, he is determined to make the most of the opportunity.

"It was tough because when I got my visa, I got injured, and I was wondering whether or not to persevere in the game, but my agents came to me and said that Peterborough wanted to take a look and I have just tried to embrace that opportunity.

"It has been a bit of a mad year since to be honest, I just want to work as hard as a I can and see where that takes me," Mendonca said.
