As we head into a two-week break away from FA Women’s National League action, it feels right to reflect on the season so far for our women’s team.

Jake Poole’s team extended their run of over 440 days without defeat in the league with the weekend win over Barnsley, but were made to work for the three points against a team that only lost by the odd goal across the two matches this season, the lowest margin so far this season.

But most importantly, the result puts us on the right path for where we want to be, with a top-two finish all but guaranteed with our substantial goal difference, while we sit just three points away from automatic promotion.

Here’s the tale of the tape across our season so far…

NEW BEGINNINGS

It was announced prior to the current season that the club would move back to the city and play its football at PIMS Park, home of Peterborough Sports Football Club.

Since then, we have yet to lose a game of competitive football in the league and have now picked up 30 points from a possible 30.

Of course, we played one memorable fixture at the Weston Homes Stadium during this time, but even then, there was no letting up on home ground.

We have scored 34 goals across the ten games so far, and have the chance to extend the total when we host Stourbridge on the final day of the regular season.

SUMMER ADDITIONS

It’s fair to say that Jake Poole’s summer signings have made an impact this season.

Jess Rousseau’s assist yesterday took her overall contributions to 25 in all competitions, while Kira Rai, who was brought in further into the season, now has 11 as the pair combined to ensure another three points at home.

Freya Andersen was another who was a late call into the team, but she has delivered when it mattered. Our number 24 has made seven league appearances, scoring five times.

While attention often falls further up the pitch, credit must also be dished out to Anna Pitt, who has made a real contribution to a defence which has only conceded 12 times this season, three at home.

Courtney Clarke, as well, has brought her experience to the midfield, having spent her youth days representing Arsenal and the Young Lionesses.

SO CLOSE TO SUCCESS

Yesterday’s win over the Reds now leaves us within touching distance of the National League Midlands title.

The three points on paper could have been all it took over the weekend, but results elsewhere means we will have to wait at least another couple of weeks to be confirmed as champions.

We will travel to Kidderminster Harriers next in April, a match which holds huge importance in the club’s history books.
