Posh Under 18s held by Huddersfield Town at the Bespoke Builds Training Ground.
Peterborough United U18s were held to a 2–2 draw at home against Huddersfield Town U18s in a dramatic encounter. The Posh looked set to secure all three points after establishing a two-goal lead in the second half, but two late strikes in stoppage time meant the sides ultimately shared the points. Despite the late setback, the defensive resilience shown throughout much of the match and the attacking intent displayed after the break provided clear positives.
Huddersfield began the game by threatening on the counter-attack and created several early opportunities. On seven minutes, Bucknor produced a composed save in a one-on-one situation to deny the visitors. Moments later, Sudakaran threw himself into a crucial sliding block to stop a dangerous effort before Bucknor reacted sharply to keep out the follow-up. The goalkeeper was called into action again on 19 minutes, making another confident save from a free-kick to preserve parity.
The Posh also created chances of their own during the first half. Lawrence attempted a strike from distance following a corner on ten minutes, but his effort sailed narrowly over the crossbar. On 32 minutes, Ndonjang tried his luck from outside the box with a well-struck effort that drifted just wide. Late in the half, McWilliams-Marcano produced an important defensive contribution, clearing a goal-bound header off the line from a Huddersfield corner. With opportunities at both ends, the sides went into the interval level at 0–0.
Changes were made at the start of the second half as Mlityalwa and Morgan-Antonio were introduced to add fresh energy in midfield and attack. The adjustment quickly proved effective. On 57 minutes, MLITYALWA capitalised on a misplaced pass from the Huddersfield goalkeeper, calmly lifting a superb chip into the net to give the Posh the lead.
The hosts continued to play with attacking intent as they searched for a second goal. On 61 minutes, a well-worked passing move inside the box ended with McWilliams-Marcano striking at goal, but the goalkeeper produced a strong save. Joseph then made an important sliding interception on 68 minutes to cut out a dangerous through ball, preserving the lead.
Further chances followed as the Posh pushed forward. Arber connected with Christoudias’ corner on 75 minutes, but his header was well saved, before Bushell fired the rebound over the bar. Miljkovic was introduced a minute later to add fresh energy to the defensive line, helping the Posh maintain their structure while continuing to look for opportunities to extend the lead.
The decisive moment appeared to arrive on 87 minutes when CHRISTOUDIAS delivered a superb free-kick from just outside the penalty area, curling his effort around the defensive wall to double the Posh advantage.
However, the closing moments brought a dramatic shift in momentum. Huddersfield reduced the deficit in stoppage time on 90+2 minutes before finding another goal just two minutes later to draw the match level. The Posh battled to see out the remaining seconds, but the contest ultimately ended in a 2–2 draw.
After the match, Lead Under 18s Coach Jimmy Unwin highlighted the positives in the team’s performance despite the late disappointment: “Defensively we showed good concentration for large parts of the game, and in the second half the substitutes brought real energy which helped us create momentum. Of course there are lessons to learn in terms of managing the closing stages, but for young players experiences like this are an important part of their development.”
Although the Posh were unable to secure the victory, the organisation, defensive commitment and attacking passages shown across much of the match reflected the group’s continued progress. Attention now turns to improving game management as they prepare for the next fixture.
