Barry Fry

It was 30-years ago today (30th May) that Barry Fry officially joined Peterborough United and over the last three decades there have been plenty of ups and downs on and off the pitch.

Fry, who initially joined the club as manager, has held a number of roles since then including his current Director of Football position and at the age of 81, is just as enthusiastic about the club as he was when he arrived in 1996.

"I can't quite remember this day 30-years ago, but I know a lot has happened in those three decades. I am 81-years-old now, but I still love what I do, the game has changed a lot in that time, but you can't stand still, or you will get left behind.

"When I was a manager, times were a little different. How you interacted with your players in the dressing room was different. As manager we had ups and downs as a club, but it goes without saying that, when Darragh MacAnthony took over as owner, he was able to take this club forward in a way that I couldn't do.

"We have enjoyed a lot of success with Darragh as owner, three wins at Wembley, promotions, play-off campaigns and a lot of memorable occasions. We know that the last couple of years in the league haven't been as we would have wanted and we are doing all we can to try and ensure that next season is far more positive," Fry said.

One of the most viral clips of Fry's tenure at the club came when he was trying to secure the services of striker Miguel De Souza from Wycombe Wanderers, alongside the striker's agent, in the Boardroom.

"Whenever that clip gets posted online, I always get a lot of messages because people love the image of me banging the gavel on the table and shouting 'sold to the fat ba**ard in the blue blazer'.

"I remember that well because the agent wanted more money that we could afford at the time, so we had to come up with a bit of an ingenious way of getting the deal done. I remember when we wanted to sign Leon McKenzie. He was a good striker at Crystal Palace, but he had suffered with a lot of injuries and they wanted £25,000 for his services.

"I knew we couldn't afford that, so I did a deal whereby we paid the £25,000 but spread it over 25 months, paying £1,000 a month. He proved to be an unbelievable signing and we sold him for big money," Fry said.

Fry also spoke of his delight at the news that former Posh front man Ivan Toney had been named in the England squad for the World Cup in America, Canada and Mexico and believes he will be an important option for Thomas Tuchel.

"What you need to remember is that Ivan has played a lot of games and scored a lot of goals in Saudi Arabia, he is used to be playing in the hot conditions and there is no way that Harry Kane is going to play every minute of every England game.

"Not only that, but Ivan is one of the best penalty takers in the world and it could come down to that. If England keep Harry fit and we steer clear of injuries, then we have a chance, but the heat is a concern."
