Darren Ferguson

Posh are looking to lift the Vertu Trophy for the third time in their history at Wembley on Sunday and manager Darren Ferguson could enter the history books by becoming the first manager to win the trophy in successive seasons with the same side.

Lou Macari won this competition back to back in the early 1990s, but not with the same side, tasting success with Birmingham City and Stoke City while Steve McMahon lifted the trophy twice with Blackpool but not in successive campaigns.

After masterminding last season's success over Wycombe Wanderers at Wembley Stadium, Ferguson will lead his team out again at the National Stadium on Sunday afternoon with Birmingham City set to provide tough opposition for his Peterborough United side.

"At the start of the season, I always make it clear that this competition means a lot to this club and you can see with the results in the group phase and how we went about our business, that the players were motivated to try and go as far as we can in the competition.

"Motivating the players for this competition was a little easier this year because a lot of them were part of the success last season, those memories that we created are memories that will last a lifetime.

"You only have to walk around the training ground and the stadium to see photographs of the day and now we have the opportunity to go back to Wembley and try and do it all again.

"It is incredibly rare for any side to reach two cup finals in successive years, for us to be going back to Wembley for the second time in 12 months is an achievement that we should all be proud of.

"I have been fortunate to win this trophy twice as a manager and once as a player, it is a wonderful day out for the supporters and they deserve it because it hasn't been the season that we wanted it to be in the league.

"There hasn't been a manager to win this competition in successive seasons with the same club, but we will be going into the game as underdogs, but I am fine with that, we were underdogs in 2011 against Huddersfield Town and we have beaten some big clubs in the Championship and in League One during my long spells with the club.

"Birmingham are the best side in our division so we know we have to reach our levels, but I think we can hurt them if we do reach our levels, we have players who on their day can hurt a lot of teams.

"I have been fully focussed on the league games since we reached Wembley, because they were the most important games, but now the next one is Wembley, we can look forward to the day, enjoy it, embrace the challenge and hopefully we put in a performance I know the players are capable of," Ferguson said,
