Barnsley earn a 2-0 win at the ABAX Stadium in latest pre-season friendly.

Peterborough United concluded their home pre-season campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Sky Bet Championship side Barnsley at the ABAX Stadium.

A goal in each half earned the visitors the victory, but manager Grant McCann will take positives from aspects of his side's performance with just a week away from the start of the league campaign.

The Tykes made a bright start to the contest with Adam Hammill curling an effort just wide of the far post inside the opening three minutes as the visitors forced several early corner kicks.

The deadlock was broken on six minutes and it was the Championship side who got their noses in front as an inswinging free-kick from the left was glanced past Tyler and into the top corner by Josh SCOWEN.

Tyler did well to hold a swerving free-kick from Alfie Mawson on 12 minutes after Forrester felled Scowen in a dangerous position.

Anderson felt he should have been awarded a spot-kick moments later after a delightful Taylor cross, but the referee waved away the protests.

The lively Edwards ghosted past two defenders and unleashed a fierce drive at goal from 20-yards on 18 minutes, Townsend tipping the effort over the bar.

Coulthirst fired over on 23 minutes after a well-worked Posh free-kick, the striker was leaning back when he attempted the effort after tricking his way into a bit of space.

Tyler did well to parry a fierce Hourihane volley moments later after good work from Winnall.

Taylor collected a pass from Tafazolli on 27 minutes in a bit of space, the former Ipswich man did well to glide past his opponent but after cutting inside, he curled his effort over the crossbar.

Taylor cracked the upright with a stunning effort on 42 minutes after collecting a throw in from Hughes with Maddison's follow-up deflected wide of the target.

Maddison tested Townsend with a free-kick on 49 minutes after he himself had been felled as Posh tried to up the tempo. Coulthirst was close to the leveller as his powerful drive was beaten around the post by Townsend.

Maddison had another go at goal on 55 minutes, but this time, the Tykes keeper made a routine save.

Winnall flashes a shot wide of the near post before Grant McCann made a double change with Tom Nichols and Leonardo Da Silva Lopes introduced from the bench.

Substitute Nichols was denied by Townsend after a good move involving Maddison and Taylor on 70 minutes.

Maddison fired a free-kick over the top on 72 minutes after substitute D'Almeida was penalised for a high boot. Baldwin glanced a Maddison corner kick wide of the target on 79 minutes.

Townsend was called upon again moments later, beating away a left-foot curler from Maddison after Taylor had showed some neat touches around the box.

Tyler produced heroics to keep Posh only the one goal behind on 82 minutes as he denied Payne from point blank range.

The visitors made it 2-0 on 89 minutes as substitute PAYNE headed home from close-range following a right-wing centre.
