Results on Bank Holiday Monday saw Posh slip back into the bottom three with Barnsley and Wolverhampton Wanderers claiming maximum points, but Darren Ferguson's men can move clear with three points against an out of form Boro' side.
Ferguson's men go into the game on the back of a 2-1 win over league leaders Cardiff City, while Tony Mowbray's men were beaten 3-2 at Wolverhampton Wanderers at the weekend.
'Middlesbrough are a good side,' Ferguson said. 'They play football the right way and earlier in the season, they were in excellent form. They have tailed off a little bit, but they have a horrendous injury list at the Riverside Stadium and regardless, it will be a difficult game for us.'
Defender Gabi Zakuani echoed the thoughts of his manager and insisted the players are just focusing on themselves despite results elsewhere affecting the battle at the bottom.
'Both teams will definitely go for it, we obviously know that we need to keep winning. We have to ignore other results, we have to just look after ourselves. Middlesbrough are not in great form, but they showed earlier in the season that they are a good side and it will be a difficult game,' Zakuani said.
Michael Bostwick is rated as 50-50 for the game, while Alex Pritchard is unlikely to be involved. The on-loan Tottenham Hotspur winger watched Saturday's win over Cardiff City from the stands. Peter Grant is a long term absentee.
Posh had sold just over 100 tickets in advance for tonight's long trip, but there is no price increase on the evening. Adult tickets are priced at £27.
