Posh Under 18s return to action at the Bespoke Builds Training Ground on Saturday morning (11am).

The Peterborough United Under 18s are back in Professional Development League action on Saturday morning as they welcome Crewe Alexandra to the Bespoke Builds Training Ground.

Jimmy Unwin's side picked up a creditable point on the road at Barnsley last time out and will have another youthful side on duty against The Railwaymen.

TEAM NEWS

Unwin has confirmed there will be a number of Under 16s in the starting line-up with a further couple from the Under 15s in the squad as they go in search of three points.

MANAGER QUOTES

"Crewe are a good side, we know how they will play, they have produced a lot of good players down the years, but it is a game that we are looking forward too and hopefully we can put in a strong performance.

"Benjamin McWilliams-Marcano is in a good place at the minute, he is among the goals and working really hard with and without the ball and he just needs to keep that up," Unwin said.

Peterborough United U18 were beaten 5–1 at home by Crewe Alexandra U18, with the scoreline proving disappointing despite a performance that featured long spells of control and a number of clear attacking opportunities.

An early mistake allowed Crewe to take the lead, but the Posh responded immediately with positive intent. Playing with quick transitions and an aggressive attacking approach, they looked to restore parity, with McWilliams-Marcano and Simmons at the heart of several counter-attacks and box penetrations. McWilliams-Marcano tested from distance after combining with Lawrence in the 10th minute, before Simmons came agonisingly close on two occasions – first seeing his cut-back strike the crossbar on 22 minutes, then hitting the woodwork again when clean through on goal three minutes later.

Crewe continued to press for a second, but the Posh carried a constant threat on the break. Fitzpatrick went one-on-one with the goalkeeper on 36 minutes after breaking free of his marker, only to be denied by a strong save. While the Posh were unable to capitalise on their chances, Crewe proved clinical and added a second goal on 38 minutes to take a 2–0 lead into the break.

The Posh made adjustments at the start of the second half, introducing Fraser in place of Arber to inject fresh energy into the back line, while maintaining a high defensive line in search of a way back into the contest. Joseph produced a committed sliding tackle on 53 minutes to halt a dangerous counter-attack, but Crewe extended their advantage again shortly afterwards with a third goal on 55 minutes.

Despite the setback, the Posh continued to push forward. Simmons was denied once more in a one-on-one situation on 61 minutes, before Sango was introduced to provide a different attacking outlet down the left. The pressure finally told on 67 minutes when Bushell met a long diagonal pass and cleverly headed the ball into the path of MCWILLIAMS-MARCANO, who showed explosive pace to break clear and lift a powerful finish over the goalkeeper to pull a goal back.

Buoyed by the goal, the Posh grew into the game and increased their share of possession, pushing their defensive line higher in pursuit of an equaliser. Sudakaran and Miljkovic, who replaced Bushell, showed strong concentration to deal with Crewe’s counter-attacking threat as the hosts committed more numbers forward. However, with everyone pushed up in the closing stages, the Posh were caught late on, conceding further goals on 90 minutes and in stoppage time to bring the match to a close at 5–1.

While the scoreline was harsh, there were clear positives in the Posh’s attacking intent, control during key phases, and the number of chances created throughout the match.

Lead Under 18s Coach Jimmy Unwin said:  "The scoreline is disappointing, but there were definite spells where we were in control and created good opportunities. The way the younger players kept pushing and competing in difficult moments shows the direction this group is heading in. We know we need to be more clinical at key moments, but experiences like this are hugely important for the players’ development.”

Posh: Bucknor, Bushell (sub Miljkovic 74 min), Joseph, Christoudias, Arber (sub Fraser 46 min), Sudakaran, McWilliams-Marcano, Lawrence, Simmons, Mlityalwa, Fitzpatrick (sub Sango 63 min). Unused subs: Westcott, Norville.
