Posh Women

Posh Women beaten by Solihull Moors in the FA Women’s National League.

Peterborough United Women suffered their first defeat in seven games after a 4-0 loss to Solihull Moors at the AMRCO Arena on Sunday afternoon in the FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands.

The hosts opened the scoring after just three minutes as a long throw into the box was headed away by Niamh Connor, but only to Becky Knight on the edge of the box and her effort on the half-volley found the bottom corner.

On six minutes, Zoe Creaney rose the highest from a Moors corner and her header smashed against the crossbar. Eva Rogers also went close to doubling their lead with an effort from inside the area, but her shot went just wide of the post.

Posh carved out their first opportunity on 15 minutes as the Moors’ defence failed to clear Rachel Lawrence’s corner and Evie Driscoll-King’s promising effort was pushed around the post by the keeper. Their momentum was short-lived, and on 18 minutes, Creaney doubled the lead for the home side with a headed effort from a corner.

One of Posh’s best chances of the game came on 27 minutes as Tara Kirk fed the ball through Keir Perkins and she advanced into the box, but a fantastic save from the keeper denied Posh the opportunity to pull one back.

Again, on 38 minutes, Perkins had another big chance as she capitalised on a mistake from the Solihull defence and went one-on-one with the keeper, but she sent her effort just wide. Solihull continued to dominate the game in the second-half as Creaney looked to double her goal tally for the afternoon from a free-kick on 59 minutes, but her effort was saved by Markwell at the near post.

On 61 minutes, Posh looked as if they could open their account for the afternoon, but Stacey McConville’s headed effort went just over the bar. With very little threat coming from the visitors for the rest of the half, Solihull added a third on 82 minutes as a spill from Markwell allowed Tiana Russell-Cartwright to regain possession before converting home from close-range.

In the final minutes of the game, Knight found her second of the afternoon, and the home side’s fourth, after a blasted effort in the box found the bottom corner following some good build-up play from the hosts.

Posh XI: Markwell, Aylmer (Oliveria, 68mins), Connor, Mugridge, Axten, McConville, Perkins, Steward, Lawrence (Dean, 74mins), Driscoll-King, Kirk (Lawlor, 61mins).
