Abbey Lawn

Posh Women welcome Leek Town Ladies to the Abbey Lawn.

Peterborough United Women face Leek Town Ladies in the FA Women’s National League on Sunday afternoon (2pm) at the Abbey Lawn as Dan Lawlor’s side look to continue their excellent run of form.

Posh Women made it six wins on the bounce in all competitions, including three consecutive victories in the league, on Thursday night after a 2-1 victory over Lincoln City Women. Leek will no doubt cause a threat to Posh, highlighting their goalscoring ability recently as they netted six past Long Eaton United Women in their last time out in the league.

The two sides have yet to face each other this season. Leek are currently sat in ninth, four points behind Posh, having played four more games than Lawlor’s side.

Team News

Posh will continue to be without midfielder Beatriz Borque and defender Elloise Copson for this weekend’s fixture, as well as forwards Zaiga Lacite and Eden Bailey who remain absent with injuries.

Lawlor’s side have been plagued with injuries this season, but is feeling positive with the number of players making their way back to full fitness and into the matchday squads.

From The Gaffer

“It’s a quick turnover period for this one. Two days rest and then another game, so something we’re not that used to.

“The opposition isn’t in a great position, so that means they’re going to come out fighting and really give us a tough game. No game at this level is an easy game, but we’re going into this one on the back of another three points, so I can't be anything but confident."

Posh Women Celebrate

Posh Women climb upto fourth after victory over Leek Town Ladies.

Peterborough United Women extended their winning streak to four games in the FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands after a 4-2 victory over Leek Town Ladies at the Abbey Lawn on Sunday afternoon, with goals from Tara Kirk, Jess Driscoll, Megan Lawlor and Jess Evans solidifying the three points.

Posh dominated the opening 45 minutes, but it took them a few chances before finding their opener. Lawlor’s side had their first opportunity inside the opening two minutes as an excellent ball from Taylor Dean fed Tara Kirk through on goal and she slotted it to an unmarked Rachel Lawrence, but her effort was safely stopped by the Leek keeper.

On eight minutes, Keir Perkins curled a ball around the Leek defence for Kirk to tap it home, but the ball hit the wrong part of her foot to go wide of the post. Excellent pressing from Perkins saw her win the ball from the Leek defender and then outpaced her before getting a shot away, but a fingertip save from the keeper pushed the ball over the bar.

On 23 minutes, Posh finally found their deserved opener as a ball into the box from Perkins fell for Kirk to slide home from close-range. Not even ten minutes later, on 32 minutes, Driscoll doubled Posh’s lead after a through ball from McConville allowed her to advance into the box and her effort went under the keeper and into the bottom corner.

It turned into quite a scrappy game in the second half and Dan Lawlor made his first change on 55 minutes as Dean, who made her debut for the club, was replaced by Andreia Oliveria. On 69 minutes, Leek Town’s Katie Maya spotted Kira Markwell off her line, and with an effort from outside the area, pulled a goal back for the visitors.

Posh looked for a response quickly, and on 75 minutes, they found one after Perkins raced towards the goal before having her shirt pulled back in the box, which saw the referee point to the spot and Megan Lawlor stepped up to cooly slot home.

On 83 minutes, Maya looked to double her goal tally for the afternoon, but her effort struck the crossbar, giving Posh a warning that they were still in the clash. Lawlor’s side, again, found their response with Jess Evans netting their fourth of the afternoon as Lawlor’s ball set Evans on her way, she took it around the keeper before firing it into the empty net.

Leek did find their second of the afternoon in the final minute of the game as a free-kick into the box was won by Paris O’Connor and her first-time effort on the turn found the bottom corner.

Posh XI: Markwell, Aylmer, Mugridge, Dean (Oliveria, 55mins), McConville (Lawlor, 70mins), Perkins, Steward, Lawrence, Driscoll, Driscoll-King, Kirk (Evans, 70mins).

Unused subs: Corry, Hendrick.
