Benjamin McWilliams-Marcano

The Under 21s are through to the Hillier (County) Cup final after a 1-0 win at Kettering Town on Monday evening.

The Peterborough United Under 21s continued their fine campaign by reaching the final of the Hillier Cup after a battling 1-0 win at Kettering Town with Benji McWilliams-Marcano the match-winner.

After a dominant first 45 minutes against a powerful Poppies side, the Posh youngsters had to battle after the break and defended manfully against the long ball to secure progress into the showpiece final against Wellingborough.

Lead Under 21s Coach Sam Gaughran said: "It was a tale of two halves. In the first half, we were excellent with the ball, we dominated the game, they couldn't get near us. We had three or four good opportunities, their goalkeeper has made three or four brilliant saves and I was impressed.

"Benji has done really well for us and he took the goal well. The pitch was hard to play on, so we adapted to the conditions, we handled the ball well and we knew at half-time, that it was going to be a challenge in the second half.

"Kettering were a strong group of men and they non-leagued us a bit in the second half, they got the ball into the channels, put lots of crosses into the box and I actually enjoyed the second half more, our players standing up to that challenge, they threw men forward, but the amount of headers, blocks and last-ditch tackles we put in was pleasing. In Academy football, you don't normally get that unbelievable intensity and desire to keep the ball out of the back of the net.

"I was really pleased with the night. We played some great football and then showed tremendous character to keep the ball out of the net."
