The Posh Under 21s are into the quarter-finals of the PDP (Professional Development Phase) Cup after an excellent 3-1 victory at Stoke City on Monday evening.
The Peterborough United Under 21s put in a controlled performance to secure a 3-1 victory against Stoke City at the bet365 Stadium to move into the quarter-finals of the Professional Development Phase Cup.
The Cup, which is effectively the end of season play-offs following the conclusion of the league programme, paired Posh with a Category One Academy and Posh deserved to progress with Nottingham Forest their next opponents.
Posh opened the scoring through TRIALIST A after good work from Benjamin McWilliams-Marcano, but the home side capitalised on a mistake to level the scores and ended the first half strongly.
However, Posh started the second half brightly and created plenty of opportunities to get their noses in front with the Stoke goalkeeper in inspired form with an excellent point-blank stop from Eddie Fox among a catalogue of saves.
It was FOX who put Posh in front, finding the back of the net after good work from Ejiro Abbey. Posh extended their advantage in stoppage time as Patryk SKUT won possession and coolly converted a one-on-one with the goalkeeper.
Lead Under 21s Coach Sam Gaughran said: "I think a 2-1 victory would have flattered Stoke if I am honest. We created the better opportunities in the 90 minutes and just came up against a brilliant goalkeeper, he made some unbelievable saves.
"We had a bit of a wobble after they scored, that came from an individual mistake and half-time came at a good time for us. However, we were controlled in the second half and thoroughly deserved the win."
Details of the home game with Nottingham Forest will be announced in due course.
