Posh Youth Team huddle together after defeat

It proved to be a night of heartache for the Posh Under 18s as they were beaten by Mansfield Town on penalty kicks in the first round of the FA Youth Cup.

The Peterborough United Under 18s were knocked out of the FA Youth Cup at the first round stage as Mansfield Town scored all five of their penalties to secure spot-kick glory after the game ended 2-2 after extra-time.

Lead Under 18s Coach Hugh Alban-Jones was left scratching his head, trying to understand how his side are not planning for a second round trip to Wigan Athletic after missing countless opportunities in front of goal.

Posh were also frustrated by the officials who failed to spot a blatant foul on Harrah Jones in the box and also giving a corner kick rather than a goal-kick - a decision that ultimately led to the second Stags goal.

Posh were dominant in the opening 15 minutes of the contest at the One Call Stadium with Kurtis Simmons hitting the inside of the post and firing wide of the target after linking well with Maxim Mlityalwa.

Mlityalwa was denied superbly by keeper Shore and fired over when well-placed before the Stags punished Posh for their profligacy in front of goal as Joshua WALTERS danced into some space before firing low past George Bucknor from the edge of the box.

Simmons fired wide on 19 minutes before the referee failed to spot a foul on Jones in the box. The equaliser did arrive on 38 minutes though and it was a well-worked set-piece, the ball worked brilliantly to SIMMONS, who made no mistake.

Four minutes before the break, Simmons was denied by the crossbar after showing good strength and awareness to roll his man and find a bit of space to unleash his effort.

Luca Christoudias was denied by the legs of Shore five minutes into the second half before the keeper did well to keep out Mlityalwa.

Just after the hour mark, the home side got their noses back in front from a set-piece, MERRY heading home at the near post. Walters fired wide as the Stags came close to a third before Shore denied substitute Crozier.

Walters tried to catch Bucknor off his line three minutes from time before Posh deservedly sent the tie into extra time, CHRISTOUDIAS working the space before firing low past Shore at his near post.

The first half of extra time followed the same pattern of the 90 minutes with substitute Mfuri heading wide, fellow replacement Norville somehow kept out by the impressive Shore before Simmons fired over.

Crozier then drilled an effort into the side-netting from an acute angle, but despite their dominance, and the fact the Stags were reduced to 10-men just before the conclusion as Renwick received two quick-fire cautions, Posh couldn't find a winner.

Mansfield scored all five of their spot-kicks  with Crozier the only man to miss, his spot-kick going wide of the target.
