Poppie Brown scores stunning free-kick as Posh Women record big success.
Peterborough United Women are now five games unbeaten in all competitions as they claimed a dominant 6-1 victory over Notts County Women on Wednesday evening in the FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands campaign at Abbey Lawn.
Posh took another early lead after Jess Drisoll’s ball found Emily BRETT at the edge of the box, she breezed past her former teammates and struck home with a superb opener on four minutes. Soon after, Evie Driscoll-King made an excellent run into the corner and crossed to Brett, but her header went over the bar.
On 15 minutes, Posh doubled their lead after Meg Lawlor’s effort was well kept out by the keeper, leaving Tara KIRK to slot the ball home. Kirk soon looked to seek another and fired a shot from 30 yards out, but her effort went just over the bar.
Kirk battled again on 34 minutes, but her strike from the edge of the box also powered over the crossbar. Just before the break, the visitors claimed back a goal as Summer GAYLE placed the ball into the bottom corner from a free-kick.
Dan Lawlor made his first change at half-time as Poppie Brown came on for Meg Lawlor. On 58 minutes, Posh extended their lead after the Magpies blocked Ella Hilliard’s free-kick, the defender’s deflection fell to DRISCOLL who then fired the ball into the bottom corner within a crowded box.
Lawlor made a triple change for the Posh on 70 minutes as Frankie Pim, Zaiga Làcìte and Renai Bennett replaced Keir Perkins, Jess Driscoll and Katie Middleton. Minutes later, Posh made it four from another inevitable Niamh CONNOR header from a corner.
Sinead Fletcher came on for Evie Driscoll-King before BROWN bagged her first club goal with a stunning free-kick on 82 minutes.
In the closing stages of the game, Posh were awarded a penalty after Brett was taken down in the box. HILLIARD stepped up and hammered the ball home to finish the tally and claim her second goal for the club.
