Rotherham United

Posh begin the new calendar year with a trip to Yorkshire to face Rotherham United in Sky Bet League One action on New Year's Day (3pm).

Peterborough United ended the final month of 2025 unbeaten in Sky Bet League One action and will be looking to start 2026 in positive fashion when they travel to the AESSEAL New York Stadium to face Rotherham United.

Posh ended 2025 with a 1-1 draw with Reading at the Weston Homes Stadium, a point that left the club in 14th place in the extremely tight League One table.

By contrast, the Millers were beaten 4-0 at Bloomfield Road against Blackpool to end the year on a low with fan unrest aimed towards manager Matt Hamshaw.

TEAM NEWS

Posh are without the services of Rio Adebisi and Sam Hughes due to injury, while centre back David Okagbue is awaiting confirmation of his ankle injury sustained in the final moments of the draw with Reading.

Chairman Darragh MacAnthony confirmed there was no break, but they will be assessing the damage sustained to the foot in the next few days.

Rotherham are expected to welcome back striker Sam Nombe, who missed the defeat to the Seasiders due to injury. Jamal Baptiste was shown a red card in that defeat, but the Millers have won an appeal against the dismissal and he will be available for selection.

ONE TO WATCH

Joe Powell

Joe Powell (pictured below) made the Millers just his third permanent home when he joined the club in the summer of 2024, following the expiration of his contract with Burton Albion. The Canning Town-born midfielder racked up over 150 appearances for the Brewers with further EFL experience coming in the shape of a loan spell with Northampton Town whilst coming through the youth ranks at West Ham United.

A midfield player with an eye for goal, Powell landed the Brewers’ Goal of the Season gong for his stunning strike against Bristol Rovers in 2023/24, which marked one of the five he returned for the campaign. Understandably popular at the Pirelli Stadium for his contribution, Powell had been offered fresh terms to remain with the Brewers, but opted to take up a new challenge in South Yorkshire with the Millers.

MANAGER QUOTES

"Rotherham haven't been able to field their best side throughout this campaign due to injury and I am sure when they do, they will start moving away from where they find themselves in the table. They have good players, but we have shown in recent away games, that we can dig in and be resolute with our defending and we will have to do that again on New Years Day," Luke Williams said.
