Posh Women U23s

Posh Women U23s secure 3-1 victory over The Royals.

Peterborough United Women U23s are now four games unbeaten in all competitions as they came from behind to beat Sutton Coldfield Town Women Development 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Trade Tyre Community Stadium in the FA Women’s National League Reserves Midlands Division.

Posh started the game quickly as a shot from Rebecca Mears found Ellie Curson at the far post, she squared the ball across goal for Ella-Mai Bale but her effort flashed over the crossbar. Posh were left ruing their chances as the hosts opened the breakthrough just before the quarter hour mark as Phoebe Hopwood latched onto a long throw-in and tucked the ball past Megan Dellar.

Bale thought she had equalised for Posh just five minutes later as she beat her defender and fired into the top corner, but the referee had deemed her to be in an offside position. Lauren King sent a dangerous cross into the box which was mishandled by Grace Owens but the ball would not fall kindly for Frankie Pim. Bale advanced onto a cross from Mears but could only fire her effort wide of the post. Mears sent another ball into the box minutes later, but Pim could not connect onto the delivery.

Posh found an equaliser in the 26th minute as Curson’s in-swinging corner was headed in by Alicia Podd. The hosts had a chance to retake the lead as Hopwood was sent clear on goal but saw her effort curl wide of the post. Mears fired a speculative shot from distance towards goal which was well saved by Owens.

It was a quick start in the second half for Posh, taking the lead in the 54th minute as Pim advanced on the left, squared the ball to Bale who directed the ball into the bottom right corner. Posh continued to threaten as substitute Jess Abrantes was found in space but could only strike her effort over the crossbar. Pim and Mears’ combined well as the latter curled an effort towards goal but was met welly by Owens.

The Royals looked to seek an equaliser as a long range effort was well handled by Dellar. Posh extended their lead late on as Pim turned her defender before firing into the top right corner at the second attempt. Pim had the chance to add a fourth minutes later as Akinyemi played her one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but the defender recovered well before she could unleash the shot.

POSH XI: Dellar, King, Sands, Osker, Richards-Reeves, Moore, Podd (sub 78min, Neto), Curson (sub 46min, Abrantes), Bale (sub 68min, Akinyemi), Pim, Mears.
