Posh Women U23s

Peterborough United Women U23s began 2024 with a 3-0 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers Women Reserves on Sunday afternoon at the idverde Training Ground in the FA Women’s National League Reserves Midlands Division.

Wolves broke the deadlock in the 37th minute as Posh attempted a clearance inside the box but struck it awkwardly before deflecting off a Wolves player and into the back of the net. Posh grew into the game however the opponents extended their lead 20 minutes from time as they set out on the counter attack from a Posh corner before the forward struck the ball past the diving Megan Dellar. Wolves claimed all three points with a third goal in the 82nd minute as a great save from Dellar fell kindly to the Wolves striker who calmly slotted the ball into the net.

The result means Wolves leapfrog Posh into second place, level on 19 points, but having played two games fewer. Posh are next in action on Sunday 21st January where they host Thrapston Town Ladies in the Northants County Cup Quarter-Finals. The following weekend they host Hull City Women Reserves in the FAWNL Reserves League Plate Quarter-Finals before facing Stourbridge Reserves in the league at the idverde Training Ground on 11th February.

Speaking on the game, Michael Allesbrook said: “Unfortunately, today we were beaten by a very good Wolves side who were ultimately better than us on the day. I can never fault the players’ desire and willingness to work hard for each other. I felt we were very organised off the ball and at times showed real discipline during our press. But when we did win the ball back, we lacked the quality and composure needed to hurt Wolves. We created some good chances but didn’t take them whereas Wolves were clinical in the key moments of the game.”

“I want to give full credit to Wolves, they came away with three points and wish them every success for the rest of the season. For us we will use our blank next Sunday to put in some really important work on the training pitch ready for the challenges that are still to come this season.”
