Posh Women suffered a 2-1 defeat to Loughborough Lightning at Abbey Lawn in the FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands.

Peterborough United Women were beaten 2-1 by Loughborough Lightning at Abbey Lawn on Sunday afternoon in a competitive top of the table encounter. Despite Dan Lawlor’s side creating some good opportunities, they were defeated after second half strikes from Jade Arber.

Posh started the game strongly with numerous opportunities in front of goal. In the opening minute, Brett put the visitor’s under pressure to reach Middleton, she whipped the ball into Brown, but her header smacked the crossbar. Soon after, Brett volleyed a shot at Lightning’s keeper after more great work down the right from Middleton.

On nine minutes, Posh were awarded a penalty after a handball in the box. Meg LAWLOR stepped up and drilled the ball into the bottom left corner to give Posh the lead. Minutes later, Langford looked to shoot from a free kick at the edge of the box, but Corry comfortably denied her effort,

On 17 minutes Perkins sent a wonderful cross into Brett but her effort went wide of the target. The visitors soon attempted to equalise. Jarowicki and Arber linked up to get a cross off to Powell, but she too saw her shot go wide.

Just before the break, Hines’ free kick by the corner flag found Greenwood, but she fired her shot over the bar. Minutes into the second half, Lightning equalised. After Langford’s through ball found ARBER, and she slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

On 56 minutes, the visitor’s took the lead after ARBER fired a long range effort into the far left corner. Posh responded well as Hilliard fired a shot from distance, but her chance skimmed wide of the target before Driscoll-King could tap the ball home.

Dan Lawlor made his first change for the Posh on 66 minutes as Tara Kirk replaced Lucie Mugridge. Ten minutes later, Renai Bennett came on for Poppie Brown.

With ten minutes to go, Corry made an excellent save from a corner that denied Lightning a third. Despite last minute attempts to level, the Posh came up short.
