Posh Women fall to defeat in their final pre-season game.

Peterborough United Women suffered a 6-1 defeat to higher-level opponents West Bromwich Albion Women on Sunday afternoon, with manager Dan Lawlor using the final pre-season game to get plenty of minutes for all players ahead of the opening game of the FA Women’s National League next weekend.

West Brom broke the deadlock inside the opening minutes as an effort was parried by Neive Corry but was headed home by their forward. The hosts continued to dominate in the early stages as an effort inside the box just went wide. Albion doubled their lead on 17 minutes as a quick counter-attack was converted from close-range.

Cassie Steward tried her luck from distance, but it was comfortable for the keeper. Posh were forced into an early change as Keir Perkins replaced Poppie Brown. Tara Kirk had a golden opportunity on 42 minutes after some brilliant play by Ellie York, she found Katie Middleton and her low cross was met by Kirk but her effort was straight at the keeper.

A double change at the break for Posh as Rosie Axten and Evie Driscoll-King replaced Lucie Mugridge and Katie Middleton. Within a minute of the second half, the hosts added a third to further extend their advantage.

Posh struck the woodwork on 49 minutes as Driscoll-King’s free-kick was met by Kirk and her header struck the post. Corry produced a good save to push away a curling effort from their forward before Albion added a fourth on 60 minutes as a strike from the edge of the box found the back of the net.

Posh made a further two changes as Elloise Copson and Alex O’Neill both replaced Ellie York and Steward just after the hour mark. Lawlor’s corner was knocked back into the box by Kirk, but was cleared by the Albion defence. Posh pulled a goal back on 75 minutes as Megan Lawlor played Middleton through on-goal and she fired her effort across the goalkeeper and into the bottom corner.

The hosts extended their advantage on 83 minutes after some lovely footwork on the edge of the box before curling her effort into the bottom corner. Albion made it six as an effort from the edge of the box had beaten Corry at the near-post.
