Pim’s first league goal seals win for the Posh Women at Sutton Coldfield.

Peterborough United Women claimed three points in the FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands campaign after a 2-0 victory over Sutton Coldfield Town Women on Sunday afternoon at The Central Ground.

The Posh began with an early opportunity where Jess Driscoll played an excellent ball into the box that found Emily Brett, but her shot safely found the hands of the host’s goalkeeper Neve Jones.

Another chance soon followed as Niamh Connor’s throw-in caused havoc in the box. Tara Kirk fired towards the goal from a deflected shot, but The Royals’ keeper dived to make the save. On 17 minutes the Posh created another close chance as Brett drove the ball into the box and laid it back to Katie Middleton, but her strike was well deflected from one of the host’s defenders.

Sutton Coldfield were the first to pick up a yellow card where Lauren Da’Casto was cautioned for taking down Driscoll from behind. Posh remained the stronger side as Brett crossed the ball into the box, but Kirk just missed her chance to tap the ball into the net, leaving the game goalless at the break.

Brett sprang into action to begin the second half, she ran through on goal, but her chance was well saved by Jones, then the ball fell kindly to Middleton, yet her efforts were headed over the crossbar.

On 53 minutes, Neive Corry remained determined to keep a clean sheet and made a great save to deny Megan Hadley the opener from a well-taken free-kick. Another chance soon followed for the hosts, as Da’Costo fired a shot over the crossbar following a counter attack.

Dan Lawlor made a change on 60 minutes as Rosie Axten replaced Lucie Mugridge. A few minutes later, Lois Jefferies tries to strike inside the box but her shot is well met once again by Corry. The hosts made a change on 68 minutes with Sarah Lampitt replacing Georgie Murphy, that was not long followed by a change for Lawlor as Frankie Pim replaced Sinead Fletcher.

The Royals began to put some pressure on Posh that led to Driscoll blocking a well-struck shot from just outside the box. Middleton is cautioned soon after for a foul on Chloe Handy. It was Posh who finally broke the deadlock on 77 minutes with a goal from Kirk. Middleton cut into the box but saw her effort well blocked, the follow-up was then met by Brett before falling to KIRK who fired home to give Posh the lead.

Frankie Pim then seals the win with her first league goal. It was Brett who advanced into the box and played a wonderful low cross to Frankie PIM who netted from close range and confirmed the three points for her team.

Lawlor made a triple change before full time where Renai Bennett, Sophie Scargill and Zaiga Lacite replaced Tara Kirk, Poppie Brown and Emily Brett.

Posh: Corry, Connor, Fletcher (sub Pim 70min), Driscoll-King, Mugridge (sub Axten 60min), Kirk (sub Bennett) 81min), Lawlor(C), Driscoll, Brown (sub Scargill 81min), Middleton, Brett (sub Lacite 81min).
