Peterborough United Women extended their advantage at the top of the FA Women’s National League Midlands table with a 2-0 win over Leafield Athletic.
The Posh Women stretched their unbeaten run to eight league matches on Remembrance Sunday with a controlled victory over Leafield Athletic at PIMS Park. Jake Poole’s side looked in sync from minute one, but were left frustrated by wasteful finishing come 40 minutes or so until the goal arrived.
Kira Rai tapped home for her second goal in as many games, and from that point on, the three points never really looked in doubt. Hayley James, in almost the exact area as Rai, added a second as we extended the gap at the top.
Posh started with purpose, setting up an opportunity for Jess Rousseau to test the visitors’ stopper in the early throes. Gallop then spurned at the other end as she knocked the ball back towards goal, before we soon redressed the balance back in our favour when Niamh Connor was denied at full stretch by Bell.
Fraser snuck in behind our defence on 30 minutes, and after a stutter, Neive Corry saved low to her right hand side.
James then had time to steady her attempt towards goal, where Bell pushed the ball back out towards the sea of blue shirts. RAI was under pressure as she broke into the box and forced the ball in on the line with a brave effort.
Rousseau came close to adding our second cometh the hour. The ball fell nicely to our number seven, who rounded Bell, but Heaselgrave recovered well to settle for a corner.
Our visitors were slow burners in the second 45 minutes, and with that, Rousseau and JAMES combined at the attacking end to make it 2-0. the full-back with a poachers finish from six-yards.
Fraser came close to reducing the arrears but a combination of Corry and the woodwork kept her at bay. Corry had two other efforts to save, both in quick succession as Leafield threatened a consolation, but Posh were deserved winners.
Posh travel to Barnsley next Sunday as the games come thick and fast.
