Keir Perkins in action

Posh Women suffer defeat in their second pre-season friendly.

Peterborough United Women fell to a 4-1 defeat to FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division side Ipswich Town Women on Sunday afternoon at Playford Road, with Alex O’Neill grabbing her first goal for the club.

The hosts struck the woodwork inside the opening 60 seconds as a mis-hit cross bounced off the top of crossbar. Town dominated the ball in the opening stages as Abbi Smith fired the ball over the bar.

Neive Corry was forced into a good save at her near-post, reacting quickly to push Natasha Thomas’ effort around the post after she was picked out by a low cross. Posh had their first opportunity on 24 minutes as Evie Driscoll-King’s cross fell to Keir Perkins on the edge of the box and her effort on the half-volley went wide.

Poppie Brown then had an effort from distance, but it went straight into the hands of the goalkeeper. Sophie Peskett drifted inside and fired her effort into the side-netting before Thomas saw her effort tipped around the post following a lovely move by the hosts.

The deadlock was broken on 40 minutes as Thomas rose the highest from a corner and guided her header past Corry. Ipswich Town doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time as Maisy Barker found the bottom corner after combining with Thomas.

The hosts had a positive start to the second half and grabbed the third goal on 53 minutes as Peskett glided past her defender before her lofted cross found the far corner. It became four on 58 minutes as Peskett’s cross found Thomas inside the box and she headed home from close-range.

Kyra Robertson fed through a lovely pass into the path of Barker, but Corry palmed her effort away from goal. Posh pulled a goal back on 86 minutes and it was a lovely finish from Alex O’Neill to score her first goal for the club. She picked up the ball on the edge of the box and sent a right-footed effort into the top corner.

Corry was called into action once again in the closing stages as she got a strong hand on Mitchell’s effort.
