Posh Women v Leafield home

Posh Women seal victory on last home game of the season.

An early goal from skipper Keir Perkins was enough to secure the three points as Peterborough United Women defeated Leafield Athletic Ladies 1-0 at Abbey Lawn on a sunny Sunday afternoon in their final home game of the season, securing a record points tally in the FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands in the process.

Posh took an early lead on three minutes as a goal-kick from Colette Bell was intercepted by PERKINS on the edge of the box, who had time to get a shot off that deflected into the bottom corner to give her side the lead.

Perkins had a chance to get a second within 10 minutes as she received the ball from Emliy Meli on the edge of the box, she managed to lob the ball over Bell but her shot struck the top of the crossbar and went out of play.

Chances continued for Jake Poole's side as Poppie Brown carried the ball forward to the edge of the box and unleashed an effort at goal, but it was directed straight at Bell.

Katie Middleton’s cross was met by Brown in the centre but her looping effort was parried away by Bell. On the stroke of half-time, Meg Lawlor saw her long range free-kick curl inches wide of the post.

Following a quiet start to the second-half, Posh found themselves on the attack after a ball over the top was brought down by Perkins to find Katie Middleton who squared the ball back to Perkins, but her first time effort rose over the crossbar.

Lawlor tested from distance as a corner fell kindly to her on the edge of the box, she struck on the half volley but saw her effort drive inches over the woodwork.

With five minutes to go, Jess Stanford returned to action for the first time in 10 months, having recovered from her ACL injury.

Jake Poole’s side managed to see out their lead and pick up the three points, taking their total to 50, a record points total for the side in the club's history.

Posh Women are next in action on Thursday the 17th April (7.45pm) where they take on Northampton Town Women in the Northamptonshire County Cup final at Corby Town FC.
