Posh Women bow out of the Adobe Women's FA Cup after defeat at Wolves

Peterborough United Women suffered a heavy 7-0 loss against Wolverhampton Wanderers Women at New Bucks Head Stadium on Sunday afternoon as their Adobe Women's FA Cup journey came to an end in the second round.

Dan Lawlor was forced into a change before kick-off as captain Keir Perkins picked up a slight injury in the warm-up and was replaced by young forward Frankie Pim for her second consecutive start for the first team while U23s forward Ella-Mai Bale was named in the matchday squad for the first-ever time.

The hosts started strongly as they opened the scoring on two minutes as Amber Hughes secured the ball on the box of the box edge, passing the defender before calmly slotting past Neive Corry. Wolves doubled their lead just two minutes later as Tammi George received the ball on the edge of the area and curled her effort into the top right corner.

Wolves continued the pressure and added a third on ten minutes as Hughes picked up a loose ball midway in the Posh half, dribbled past the outrunning Corry and passed the ball into the empty net.

Posh began to grow into the game and carved their first effort on the half-hour mark as Frankie Pim played Poppie Brown through on goal, but her effort was straight at Thomas. Katie Middleton struck from distance shortly after but saw her shot rise over the crossbar.

Corry was forced into a brilliant double save from close-range as Wolves continued to threaten but the hosts extended their lead on the stroke of half time as Roberts curled an effort into the top right corner from the left side of the box.

Lawlor made a change at the break as Megan Lawlor replaced Poppie Brown in midfield. Hughes fired over the bar on 50 minutes as she found space on the right while Lucie Mugridge headed off the line as Hughes sent a powerful strike towards goal.

Anna Morphet saw her effort deflected off the Posh defence and onto the post before Sophie Bramford curled into the bottom left corner to add a fifth for the hosts. Wolves added a sixth on 66 minutes minute as Katie Johnson’s deflected off Lawlor and into the back of the net. Middleton flashed an effort into the side-netting as she advanced into the box.

Corry was forced into action in the closing stages to deny Hughes close-range in quick succession.  However, Hughes grabbed her hat-trick on the afternoon and further extended Wolves’ advantage as Hughes converted from inside the box after Corry parried the ball away. Middleton searched for a consolation goal as she cut inside the box in injury-time, but her curling effort deflected over the crossbar.
