Posh Women

Posh Women beaten by Sheffield FC Women.

Peterborough United Women suffered a 5-0 defeat to Sheffield FC Women at the Abbey Lawn on Sunday afternoon in the FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands.

Sheffield started the game on the front foot and were awarded a penalty in four minutes as Stacey McConville fouled Molly Waite inside the box. Brooke Smith converted from the spot into the bottom right corner. Sheffield had another chance on 18 minutes as a corner was sent out to the edge of the box and was latched onto by Stacey Buxton but she sent her first-time volley well over the bar.

The visitors doubled the lead on 23 minutes as Millie Fulger jumped highest from Alex O’Neill’s corner and guided the ball into the top right corner. Posh taunted the Sheffield defence on 38 minutes as Evie Driscoll-King fired a low cross towards the back post, but no shirt in blue could latch onto it. Sheffield FC netted a third on 40 minutes as Molly Waite was played through on goal before calmly placing her shot into the bottom right corner.

Posh eventually tested the Sheffield goalkeeper on 50 minutes as Megan Lawlor floated her free-kick towards goal, but was safely collected by Brooke Smith. Sheffield quickly responded and made it four on 52 minutes after Neive Corry made an excellent save to deny Sheffield initially but the ball fell kindly to Buxton who slotted her shot into the bottom corner.

Sheffield score their fifth of the game on 59 minutes as Mo McIntosh got behind the Posh defence before firing her effort into the back of the net, despite Corry getting a strong hand on the ball.

Just after the hour mark, Lawlor drifted a free-kick into the box and Driscoll-King’s header at the back-post was safely collected by Smith. Posh had another chance for a consolation on 66 minutes as Keir Perkins capitalised on a defensive error, but Smith stood strong to block her effort.

Corry was forced into a save shortly after Sheffield broke away, with Buxton firing a shot straight at her. O’Neill rattled the crossbar from a free-kick before Sheffield had a goal disallowed for offside in the closing stages of the game.

Posh XI: Corry, York (sub 56mins, Aylmer), Connor, Evans (sub 72mins, Podd), Mugridge, Driscoll-King, McConville (sub 46mins, Oliveria), Perkins, Steward (sub 76mins, Copson), Lawlor (sub 68 mins, Dean), Kirk.
