Peterborough United Under 18s battled out a goalless stalemate with Mansfield Town to achieve their first point of the PDL Cup campaign.
Posh started the afternoon on the front-foot, Joe Davies had an opportunity inside two minutes when his strike was drilled wide of the woodwork. Max Beech created an opportunity of his own just a few minutes later, Davon Gbajumo did well to drive in-field before he found the former who fired at Harrison Leech.
Posh continued to probe, Beech came close on half-hour but his end effort was well stopped by the Stags’ shot-stopper who was a standout performer in the first period.
Down at the other end, Mansfield found a rare opportunity on 36 minutes, Tom Unwin did well to deny the Stags a lead when he blocked a strike from point-blank after a neat move from the hosts.
Bolu Shofowoke should have put Posh ahead on the verge of half time when the front man rounded Leech, but he was unable to turn the ball home into an open net.
Clear-cut chances were few and far in the early moments after the interval; Posh looked to control the tempo while their counterparts soaked up pressure and tried to hit Unwin’s side on the break.
Noah Freeman combined well with Joe Davies on the overlap before the full-back picked out Shofowoke at the back post midway through the half, but Maher recovered well to deny the forward a simple finish from close range.
Both teams competed well in the final moments, but neither side was able to find the breakthrough and the spoils were shared in Nottinghamshire.Â
