Posh U21s v Sheffield United U21s

Posh U21s narrowly beaten by The Blades on Tuesday afternoon.

Sydie Peck’s late penalty condemned Peterborough United U21s to a 1-0 defeat to Sheffield United U21s on Tuesday afternoon at the idverde Training Ground in the Professional Development League.

Trialist A was called into action in the opening stages of the game as The Blades’ Fernando Macedo got behind the Posh backline, but the Posh goalkeeper stood strong to deny the visitors’ forward. At the other, Jacob Wakeling struck the outside of the post after fantastic work down the right-hand side to shrug off his defender and advance into the box.

Jordan Amissah then produced a fantastic save on 14 minutes, Sam Dreyer picked out Wakeling just inside the area and his low-driven effort was saved well by The Blades goalkeeper. Wakeling had another big opportunity to break the deadlock on 21 minutes, sending a side-footed volley over the bar after meeting Roddy McGlinchey’s cross at the front-post.

Chances were far and between in the latter stages of the first half, Wakeling dragging an effort wide of the far-post while the visitors had the ball in the back of the net, but One was adjudged to be in an offside position.

Posh started the second half brightly as Aaron Powell’s cross into the box was met by Harry Titchmarsh, but he couldn’t keep his header down. However, it was the hosts who broke the deadlock on 50 minutes as Macedo’s cut back found Owen Hampson just inside the area and he placed his effort into the bottom corner.

The visitors should have had a second on 57 minutes as Dreyer lost possession and One was picked out inside the box, sending his left-footed effort narrowly wide. Minutes later, at the other end of the pitch, Janos Bodnar’s cross from the right found Harry Titchmarsh, but his header came off his defender and went narrowly over the bar.

Hampson went close to doubling The Blades lead just after the hour mark as his effort from the edge of the box struck the crossbar. Posh made two changes on 65 minutes as Bodnar and Trialist B were replaced by Reuben Marshall and Gabe Overton.

Posh found the equaliser on 73 minutes as Titchmarsh’s corner was met by Dreyer at the front-post, his header was tipped onto the post by The Blades goalkeeper and Wakeling was there to tap home on the rebound.

The Blades secured the victory in the closing stages of the game as Charlie Staniland was brought down inside the box by Thomas, Peck stepped up and converted calmly from the spot.
