Posh U21s set to face The U’s in season opener at the Weston Homes Stadium.

Peterborough United U21s kick off their Professional Development League campaign on Tuesday afternoon (2pm) as they welcome Colchester United U21s to the Weston Homes Stadium.

The under 21s faced a mixture of sides throughout pre-season, including a number of local non-league sides while also facing category one academy sides, and was unbeaten ahead of the new campaign.

Posh finished their 2022/23 Professional Development League campaign in sixth place and will look to build on that for the new campaign while progressing well in the Premier League Cup, which is set to begin on Friday evening (7pm) against Bristol City.

The U’s competed in the Southern division last season, finishing ninth in the table, and have appointed former Posh U21s manager Matthew Etherington in the summer, with a return to the Weston Homes Stadium in his first competitive game for The U’s.

Head of Academy Professional Development Phase coach, Jamal Campbell-Ryce, is looking forward to getting the new campaign started and is expecting a tough afternoon against a well-organised side.

Campbell-Ryce said: “The players want to have competitive games, so it’s good to be back in action in the league. We have had plenty of pre-season friendlies and it was a good mixture of sides we faced, including category one academies and non-league sides, which is a different type of opposition. I think we are in a really good place, but this is when it matters and three points are at stack.

“Colchester will be well-organised, we know their under 21s coach very well in Matty Etherington and will make sure his side is well drilled. So, we will have to be at it from the start and make sure we go into the game full of confidence, show loads of energy and transitions will be a big part, but we want the players to give a good account of themselves and will be another good experience to play at the stadium.”

Tickets can be brought on the day at the Weston Homes Stadium Box Office. Admission is free for season ticket holders with adult tickets available for £3 and concessions (seniors and under 18s) at £1. The Main North Stand will be open for the fixture.

The game will be streamed live on Posh+ and will be free for Posh+ subscribers or £3 for a match pass.
