Posh secure victory over The Tykes at the Weston Homes Stadium.
Peterborough United U21s returned to winning ways in the Professional Development League after a 2-1 win over Barnsley U21s at the Weston Homes Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
Posh opened the scoring on eight minutes as Kai Corbett netted his ninth goal of the season. Ben Thompson played a lovely ball through to Corbett and he fired low into the bottom corner.
There was nearly an immediate response from the visitors as an effort from Fabio Jalo was pushed away by Will Blackmore. The game came to a halt for a long period of time following an injury to Nathan James, who unfortunately couldn’t continue and was replaced by Jonathan Bland.
When play restarted, Barnsley had the opportunity to level the scoring as Danny Benson played a ball over for Josiah Dyer and his shot towards the near-post was well saved by Blackmore.
Posh were awarded a penalty in injury-time of the first half after Ricky-Jade Jones was fouled in the box by Benson. The penalty was converted by Kabongo Tshimanga, calmly slotting the ball into the bottom right corner with Jamie Searle being sent the wrong way.
Chances were very limited in the early stages of the second half as Corbett and Kelland Watts both had efforts blocked in quick succession on 49 minutes. Posh made their first change of the afternoon on 61 minutes as Dan Butler and Benjamin Mensah were replaced by Aaron Powell and James Dornelly.
The visitors found the back of the net on 77 minutes after Dyer converted from close-range, but he was flagged offside by the linesman. However, they were able to pull a goal back just a minute later as Dyer played the ball across to Jalo and he fired the ball past Blackmore from close-range.
The Tykes nearly found an equaliser on 84 minutes after a free-kick from Jack Butterfill forced Blackmore into a save in the top right of his goal. Chiha had the opportunity to further extend Posh’s lead in stoppage time as Searle dropped Corbett’s cross, but the midfielder blasted his effort over the bar.
