Posh U18s secure three points in their opening game of the Premier League Cup.

Peterborough United U18s began their Premier League Cup group stage campaign with a 3-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion U18s at the idverde Training Ground on Saturday morning.

Albion took the lead on 23 minutes as their forward advanced down the left-hand side before he was brought down in the box by Luke Gilbert. Their forward stepped up and calmly slotted the spot-kick away.

Posh grabbed the equaliser just after hour mark as Tom Unwin found Tyler Winters on the edge of the box and his low-driven effort to the near-post had beaten the Albion goalkeeper, netting his fifth goal in four matches.

The under 18s took the lead in the closing stages of the game and it was a brilliant goal from forward Joel Odei-Larbi. A loose pass from the Albion defender saw the forward pick up the ball, calmly slotted the ball through the legs of an Albion man before advancing to the edge of the box and curling an effort into the top right-hand corner.

Posh sealed their first victory of the campaign in injury-time as some clever build-up play saw the ball at the feet of Odei-Larbi inside the box and his low cross was tapped home by Joe Davies.

Head of Academy Professional Development Phase Coach, Jamal Campbell-Ryce, said: “It was always going to be tough going into the Premier League Cup, especially with the Category One academies. I said to the players before the game that they would have to really dig in and show a lot of togetherness. We mentioned that last week and even though we lost 4-1 to Millwall, there were plenty of positive signs.

“We backed that up on Saturday, I thought all the players were brilliant and defended really well, in and out of possession, and I thought we were the better team in the end. I have mentioned to the players in previous weeks that if the principles come out, then the results will follow and hope the result on Saturday gives them that confidence. It was tremendous to see them all celebrating tackles and at the end of the game.”

Posh XI: West, Freeman, Gilbert, Toynton, Rose, Unwin, Marcon, Holley, Kelmendi, Winters, Changunda.

Subs: Sakalas, Beech, Trialist, Odei-Larbi, Davies.
