Posh U18s progress in the Under-18 Professional Development League Cup.

Peterborough United U18s secured their place in the next round of Under-18 Professional Development League Cup after an emphatic 5-2 victory over Huddersfield Town U18s at the idverde Training Ground on Saturday afternoon.

Posh opened the scoring on 12 minutes as The Terriers tried to play out of the back, but were forced into a mistake and Tyler Winters was there to lift the ball over the keeper and into the back of the net.

After a quiet rest of the first-half, the under 18s doubled their advantage five minutes after the break as Harley Mills’ corner was poked home from close-range by Benjamin Arthur. The Terriers pulled a goal back from the penalty spot, but the two-goal advantage was reinstated three minutes later as Winters was on-hand at the back-post to force home Mills’ in-swinging free-kick.

Reuben Marshall got in on the action and added a fourth, flicking home Josh Marcon’s low cross at the near-post. Posh grabbed a fifth goal on 70 minutes, and Mills was involved once again, as his delivery from the left found Dennis Kelmendi inside the box, but after a small scramble, the forward was able to force the ball home.

The Terriers cut the deficit in the closing stages, but the victory meant the under 18s progressed into the next round of the Under-18 Professional Development League Cup.

Speaking after the game, manager Jamal Campbell-Ryce said: “That performance was a reaction from last Saturday and Tuesday night. The team have been in a good place in the last few months, but then obviously we lost to Sheffield United and then Northampton Town, so the biggest thing for me was showing a reaction and a bit of character and they did that by reaching the next round of the cup.

“We went into a new shape, similar to what the academy wanted to do, including the U21s and the first team. We only worked on the shape for about half an hour the day before, and although there’s plenty to work on, they were trying to implement what I was asking of them and that was the most pleasing aspect of the performance."
