Evan Weir

Evan Weir set to officially become a Posh player on 1st July after agreeing a long-term contract with the Football Club.

Peterborough United are delighted to announce the signing of left-sided defender Evan Weir, with the 24-year-old putting pen to paper on a three-year deal (with an additional year option).

Weir will officially become a Posh player on 1st July when his contract with Walsall comes to a close and will link up with his new team-mates for pre-season training.

The Republic of Ireland international made 55 appearances for the Saddlers after joining from Drogheda. He scored four times last season, taking his career tally to 13, with a number of those coming from direct set-pieces.

Manager Luke Williams said: "Evan is a really positive player, he can fend for himself as a defender, but he can also join in attacks and deliver into the box well. He makes a lot of progressive passes and was one of the most productive players in terms of forward passing in League Two last season.

"He is a terrific striker of a dead ball, which is rare, there is a fine art to it. He has excellent technique and can generate a lot of power, so we look forward to having that as an additional tool. I am looking forward to working with him."

Weir said: "When I first heard of the interest, it was a move that was something that really appealed, the opportunity to move up a league and test myself at a new level.

"I am delighted to get it done so early in the summer and I can't wait to get started and work with the manager, Luke Williams. I know David (Okagbue) really well, we have already spoken about places to live and areas in the city, and the fact that I know someone so well already is definitely a positive.

"I like to take set-pieces, I have scored a few goals and hopefully that will continue here. League One is a really exciting league with the teams coming down from the Championship, they are going to be good occasions, and I am really excited to play in front of the supporters," Weir said.
