Posh Women Celebrate

Posh progress into County Cup final after victory over local rivals.

Peterborough United Women secured their place in the Northants FA County Cup final for a third consecutive season after a dominant 3-0 victory over Northampton Town Women at the Harpole Playing Fields on Sunday afternoon, with goals from Jess Evans, Keir Perkins and Jess Driscoll.

Posh got out of the ranks fast, and in just five minutes, opened the scoring after Rachel Lawrence’s corner caused a scramble inside the Cobblers' area before Evans fired home through a number of bodies.

Lawlor’s side continued to search for a second, while the hosts failed to create any tests for Neive Corry. On 30 minutes, another corner from Lawrence caused havoc inside the area, and Posh appealed that the ball had gone over the line, but it was not given.

On 41 minutes, Northampton’s Omenazu created their first opportunity, but her effort was blocked by Niamh Connor. Just four minutes later, Keir Perkins managed to run past her defender and sent a low-driven shot towards goal, but the keeper made a low save to deny her.

As the second half commenced, Posh, once again, came out hungry for the second, and they found it within the opening minute as Perkins’s low cross found Driscoll running into the area and she cooly slotted it home into the bottom corner.

The Cobblers’ best chance of the game came on 63 minutes as Lucy Farrow’s half-volley attempt from the edge of the box went narrowly wide of the target.

Posh continued to threaten the Northampton defence and, on 74 minutes, Lawrence’s free-kick looked to be heading into the top corner, but was headed off the line by a Cobblers’ defender. Just a minute later, another Lawrence free-kick attempt seemed to be going in, but was pushed onto the bar by Holly Mayfield.

After a prolonged period of dominance from Posh, they finally found their third goal of the afternoon with a powerful effort from Perkins on the edge of the box, which sailed over the keeper and into the back of the net.

It will be a third successive season in the final of the competition for Posh and will face Northampton Town Development Squad, who ran out 3-0 winners over Moulton Ladies.
