Posh are into round four of the Carabao Cup after a 7-6 penalty shoot-out win over Barnsley after a pulsating 3-3 draw in normal time.
Was it football, or was it basketball? That was the question that manager Luke Williams referenced in his post-match interview and it is easy to understand the comparison because there was so much attacking intent on display that at times, the centre of the pitch was empty.
There were over 40 shots in the game and that is without a high calibre penalty shoot-out, which was eventually won by Luke Williams' side 7-6 with Posh scoring all of their seven spot-kicks.
It was a night that started in horrendous fashion as Cameron MCGEEHAN took advantage of a terrible blunder by Alex Bass, who took a heavy touch from a goal-kick by David Okagbue, leading to the former Northampton Town man heading the ball into a gaping net. That was on two minutes.
Ethan Williams saw an effort saved by Flavell, on four minutes before Bass made two excellent stops to keep out McGeehan and Cleary before David Okagbue somehow cleared off the line.
On 12 minutes, Posh hit the crossbar as Harley Mills' effort clipped the top of the bar from around 20-yards. The scores were level on 19 minutes as LEONARD was in the right place at the right time to poke home from close-range after good work from Lucca Mendonca.
On 23 minutes, Posh had a chance to take the lead as Ormerod raced clean through on goal, but Flavell did well to deny the former AFC Fylde man. Mills saw a shot saved by Flavell before ORMEROD got his first of the night, superbly heading home a delicious delivery from Mills.
Toure fired wide for the visitors before Flavell kept out Williams as both sides traded chances in front of goal. On 39 minutes, CLEARY levelled the scores, racing into the box and firing past Bass.
Connell saw a long-range effort tipped over by Bass on 48 minutes and then the keeper kept out Richards as the Tykes started the second half well. Bass made another save on 53 minutes to keep the scores level before McGeehan fired over from close-range.
Leonard saw a shot go wide on 62 minutes before Bass kept another effort from distance out from Connell. On 73 minutes, Barnsley made it 3-2, from one end to the other with CLEARY adding the finishing touch into the bottom corner.
Leonard saw a shot saved by the body of Flavell on 81 minutes before Bass denied Kelly at the other end. On 88 minutes, Posh levelled the scores as ORMEROD headed home another fine cross from Mills.
Edwards was denied a winner deep into stoppage time by Flavell, sending the tie to penalties.
The spot-kicks were all of high calibre, Posh scored all seven with Leonard, Ormerod, Mills, Chris Conn-Clarke, Josh Feeney, Liam Kelly and Harrison Jones on target with Bass keeping out Alker to secure progress into the fourth round.
