Harry Leonard in action against Bristol Rovers

A first half Harry Leonard spot-kick secured progress into round two of the Carabao Cup for only the third time in the last 10 years.

Peterborough United started the new campaign with a 1-0 victory over Sky Bet League Two side Bristol Rovers in the first round of the Carabao Cup with striker Harry Leonard scoring the only goal of the game.

Leonard, who took a little while to find the back of the net following his arrival from Blackburn Rovers last season, wasted no time in getting on the score-sheet as he coolly dispatched from 12-yards following a handball in the box.

Jack Aitchison and Harley Mills both had efforts from wide angles that cleared the crossbar in the opening quarter of an hour of the contest before the deadlock was broken on 17 minutes as Harbottle handled a David Okagbue cross allowing LEONARD to do the rest from the spot.

Leonard was denied by Young on 22 minutes after excellent persistent play from Owura Edwards down the right hand side before the returning Tom O'Connor was well placed to keep a cross from reaching its intended target.

Bass did well to beat away a long-range effort from Tommy Leigh while Shofowoke could have done slightly better at the other end after a reverse pass from Leonard, his effort was fairly routine for Young.

Shofowoke was denied by Young again moments later before Leonard was a whisker away from a telling touch following an excellent left-wing centre from Harley Mills.

Cavegn was denied by Bass on 50 minutes before the Posh shot-stopper did well to keep out a free header from Harbottle following the umpteenth long-throw.

Leonard headed wide in the final 10 minutes while Gough fired over from 25-yards, but Posh defended their box manfully in the second period and saw out the game to secure progress into the second round of the competition.
