Cian Hayes

Winger Cian Hayes scored twice as the Posh Under 21s eased to a 5-1 win over Barnsley at the Bespoke Builds Training Ground.

The Peterborough United Under 21s moved to within three points of Sheffield United at the top of the Professional Development League table after a convincing 5-`1 victory over Barnsley.

Sam Gaughran's side raced into a 4-0 lead at the interval and added a fifth in the second half after the Tykes had pulled a goal back inside the first five minutes of the second 45.

The deadlock was broken in spectacular style on seven minutes as full-back Noah FREEMAN lashed home an unstoppable drive into the top corner after Declan Frith's shot was blocked.

Cian HAYES doubled the lead with a smart finish after a typically forceful run before Joe ANDREWS made it 3-0, linking with Hayes before firing a clinical effort into the corner.

On 39 minutes, Posh made it 4-0 as a curling ball into the box from FRITH eluded everyone and found the corner. Frith fired over moments later as Posh dominated.

Two minutes into the second half, Barnsley pulled a goal back after a cut-back from the by-line before HAYES produced a fine solo run and finish to complete the scoring.

David Kamara and Bolu Shofowoke both went close to adding to the score-line, but Posh settled for five.

Posh: Smith, Freeman, Andrews, Claxton, Mendonca, O'Brien-Brady, Frith (sub Changunda 75min), Sykut, Aderoju (sub Kamara 46min), Odoh, Hayes (sub Kamara 59min).
