Sam Dreyer

Sam Dreyer netted twice in a comfortable win for Posh U21s at the Weston Homes Stadium.

Peterborough United U21s secured a comfortable 5-0 victory over Charlton Athletic U21s at the Weston Homes Stadium on Tuesday afternoon in the Professional Development League, with Sam Dreyer grabbing a brace.

The first opportunity of the game fell on 14 minutes as Kai Corbett won the ball back inside the box after good pressure on the Addicks’ defender and sent an effort into the side-netting from a tight angle. Posh were forced into an early change on 16 minutes as Benjamin Mensah was replaced by Ashton Fox.

Corbett then forced Henry Molyneux into a good save as his free-kick from distance saw the Addicks’ goalkeeper scrambling across goal, pushing his effort around the post. However, from the resulting corner, Posh opened the scoring on 19 minutes as Sam Dreyer rose the highest to head home Corbett’s corner.

The visitors created their first chance on 28 minutes as Toby Bower’s dipping free-kick fell on top of the netting. Will Lakin was then called into action, getting down low to keep out Joshua Laqeretabua’s effort.

Corbett’s free-kicks continued to cause problems for the Addicks defence as a low-driven effort from the left area of the box was well-saved by Molyneux before Harry Thomas sent a header on the rebound over the bar.

Posh started the second half strongly and were close to doubling their lead on 49 minutes as Corbett and Trialist linked-up well and the trialist was slipped through on-goal, but was denied by the body of Molyneux. Dreyer doubled his tally of the afternoon on 51 minutes as Kellan Hickinson sent a low cross into the box and the defender was there to slot the ball home.

It became three on 62 minutes and it was another great delivery from Corbett as his corner was guided into the far-corner by Trialist B. Matthew Laycock was forced into action as Mack Riley got behind the Posh defence, but the Laycock was out quickly to deny the forward.

Posh extended their advantage on 73 minutes and it was lovely goal as Corbett picked up the ball on the edge of the box, chipped it over the Addicks’ defence to find Trialist B, who struck it first-time and his powerful effort smashed against the underside of the crossbar and into back of the net.

It was six on 82 minutes as Hisham Chiha played a lovely ball over the top to Trialist C, he took it down beautifully before sliding the ball under the on-rushing goalkeeper. Posh were down to 10-men in the closing stages of the game as Corbett was shown a straight red-card for a high-foot on the Addicks’ defender.

Posh XI: Lakin (Laycock, 46min), Mensah (Fox, 16min), Dreyer, Thomas, Powell (Tonge, 60min), Harris (Trialist C, 68min), Chiha, Van Lier (Hickinson, 46min), Trialist A, Corbett, Trialist B.
