Posh Women Celebrate

Posh Women conclude their campaign at the Abbey Lawn with victory over league champions.

Peterborough United Women secured three points in their final home game of the season at the Abbey Lawn after a 2-1 victory over FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands champions Stourbridge Women on Sunday afternoon.

Posh started the game strongly and had multiple chances that looked promising in the opening few minutes, with the best of those coming from Keir Perkins as she curled an effort just wide of the post on 10 minutes.

Posh’s dominance was soon halted as Stourbridge’s Hannah Fishwich opened the scoring for the visitors on 15 minutes with a clever flick at the near-post that managed to beat Nieve Corry.

The home side looked quick to bounce back and on 20 minutes, a superb run from Rachel Lawrence down the right-hand side allowed her to get her cross away, which hit the inside of the post and fell into the keeper’s hands. Two minutes later, another Lawrence cross found its way into the box, but was just too far in front of Tara Kirk to tap home.

Perkins went close to finding the equaliser on 34 minutes as Kayleigh Aylmer’s cross was taken down by Perkins inside the box, but she scuffed her effort over the bar. It was another big chance for Posh three minutes later as the ball fell to Aylmer just inside the area and her effort on the half-volley went narrowly over the bar.

As the second half got underway, Posh continued to push for an equaliser, and they found it on 50 minutes as a great cross into the box from Perkins saw Kirk rise the highest to head the ball into the back of the net.

Dan Lawlor’s side seemed to have the best chances for the rest of the half. On 58 minutes, Perkins teed up Evie Driscoll-King inside the box, but her effort was well-blocked by a Stourbridge defender.

On 85 minutes, Posh finally found their well-deserved second goal of the game as a corner from Lawrence found the head of Niamh Connor who guided her header into the far corner to put the home side in front.

With nearly 13 minutes of added time, the visitors came close to bringing the game all-square as a low cross into the box found Niamh Deasy, but she blasted her first-time effort over the bar.
