Posh Under 21s celebrate against Luton Town

Posh began their Premier League Cup campaign in fine fashion with an emphatic victory at Kenilworth Road.

The Peterborough United Under 21s got off to a flying start in the Premier League Cup as goals from Danny Ormerod, Patryk Sykut, Kurtis Simmons and Ejiro Abbey secured a 4-0 victory against Luton Town on Monday evening.

It was a dominant display from start to finish from Sam Gaughran's side who also hit the woodwork twice and forced the young Hatters goalkeeper into a string of fine saves.

Chris Conn-Clarke played a starring role in the victory, with a hand in three of the four goals as Posh played some eye-catching football at Kenilworth Road.

Charlie Booth did brilliantly to keep out a Harry Ashfield header at full-stretch on 27 minutes from an Abbey cross before Sykut struck the bar from 12-yards out three minutes later.

Luton, who had a goal disallowed inside the opening 10 minutes by Archie Shepherd due to offside, were trying desperately to hang on to their clean sheet until half-time, but they fell four minutes short.

It was ORMEROD who opened the scoring, collecting a cross from Evan Weir before finishing past the goalkeeper from close-range. It could have been 2-0 moments later as the former AFC Fylde man hit the crossbar before Luton somehow managed to hack the loose ball clear with a number of players trying to force the ball over the goal-line.

Four minutes after the re-start it was 2-0 as SYKUT collected a pass from Conn-Clarke and fired low into the bottom corner. Posh made changes on the hour and one of those replacements, Kurtis SIMMONS didn't take long to make an impression, tapping home after Conn-Clarke's shot was parried by Booth.

Simmons fired into the side-netting on 81 minutes before Posh made it 4-0 and it was the goal of the game, some excellent passing football carved out the chance with Conn-Clarke squaring for ABBEY to complete the scoring.

Bastian Smith made a couple of late stops to keep out Lorentzen-Jones but Posh were good value for the 4-0 victory. Nottingham Forest and Newcastle are the other two teams in the group.
