Ejiro Abbey was on target as the Posh Under 21s recorded an impressive 2-1 victory against Swansea City.
The Peterborough United Under 21s became the first side at that age level to claim victory at the Swansea.com Stadium in over five years as goals from Ejiro Abbey and Lucca Mendonca earned Sam Gaughran's side a 2-1 victory.
The win secured Posh's passage into the play-offs in the Professional Development League and it was a deserved success after a resolute defensive display coupled with a threat at the other end.
ABBEY, deployed as a striker in the absence of a recognised forward in the squad, took his goal expertly after a flick on from Benji McWilliams-Marcano, while MENDONCA was in the right place at the right time to convert from a right-wing free-kick.
Posh defended admirably and protected goalkeeper Ben Westcott, who had no saves of note throughout the 90 minutes. Lead Under 21s Coach Sam Gaughran said: "It was a really good performance, particularly defensively, where we have had a few issues in the last couple of games. We spoke about that at length in the build-up to the game and the lads stuck to their task.
"Ejiro took his goal well, racing between two centre backs and finishing calmly after Benji had turned into Duncan Ferguson with a brilliant flick on. It was pleasing to score from a set-piece, we were aggressive from set-pieces throughout the day, we went 2v2 at the back and caused them problems because our delivery was strong.
"It was backs to the wall in the last 20 minutes, but not in terms of chances, more possession. It was an excellent win and we look forward to welcoming Brentford next week," Gaughran said.
The Bees will be the visitors to the Weston Homes Stadium on Tuesday (1pm) with season ticket holders admitted free of charge. Admission otherwise is £3 for adults and £1 for concessions. It will be the final game of the league structure with Posh moving forward to the play-offs with further details to follow.
