Poor Posh beaten by MK Dons in the Checkatrade Trophy and bow out of the competition.

Under it's former sponsorship of Johnstone's Paint, the trophy was kind to Peterborough United, but a heavy defeat to Norwich City's development side was followed up by a disappointing home reverse by Milton Keynes Dons at the ABAX Stadium.

A goal from one-time loanee Kieran Agard gave Karl Robinson's men a deserved success on a night where nothing went right for Posh to the frustration of the home faithful.

George Moncur saw a shot deflected into the side-netting inside the opening two minutes before Thomas-Asante saw a shot deflected wide at the other end as both sides made a lively start.

Maddison saw a right-footed effort beaten behind by Nicholls before Baldwin's volley was blocked on the line by Carruthers after an excellent set-piece delivery from the aforementioned Maddison.

Edwards fired straight at Nicholls on the quarter hour mark after linking with Moncur but the winger will feel he could have done better given the position he found himself in.

McGee made a smart stop to deny Reeves on 27 minutes as the Dons came close to finding the breakthrough.

Both teams exchanged shots at goal on 37 minutes, first Moncur was denied by Nicholls before Reeves fired wide at the other end.

Agard dragged a left-footed shot wide of the target moments later after being afforded time and space in the penalty area.

Posh fell behind on 39 minutes as Maddison was dispossessed by Thomas-Asante, he fed the overlapping Carruthers and he picked out one-time Posh loanee Kieran AGARD who had a simple finish from six yards.

Grant McCann made a change at the break with Paul Taylor replacing Edwards. Reeves fired narrowly over the top on 49 minutes as the Dons threatened a second goal.

McGee did well to deny the lively Thomas-Asante on 51 minutes with a second goal looking imminent for the visitors. McGee produced another fine stop to deny Bowditch on 55 minutes and then repeated the feat moments later although the offside flag was raised this time.

Tom Nichols replaced Moore just after the hour mark as McCann made his second change to somehow try and find a way back into this contest. The last throw of the dice was to introduce Nathan Oduwa for Moncur.

McGee was called upon yet again to keep out substitute Rasulo as the Dons almost walked the ball into the back of the net.

Tafazolli headed a corner from Maddison inches past the post as the tie moved into the final 10 minutes at the ABAX Stadium. Nichols found the side-netting late on after his namesake in goal for the Dons dropped a bit of a clanger with a throw out to a team-mate.

Posh appealed in vain for a spot-kick for handball as Forrester's shot appeared to strike an arm before Nichols planted a header wide from a deep Maddison centre. Thomas-Asante sent a shot inches wide of the far post a minute into stoppage time.
