A Posh XI were beaten on penalty kicks in the Maunsell Cup final.

A Peterborough United XI suffered a 4-2 defeat on penalties in the final of the Maunsell Cup with AFC Rushden and Diamonds holding their nerve from the spot to lift the trophy.

It was an absorbing tie in the 90 minutes with David Farrell's men dominating the first half, however, they only had a fine Aaron Williams header from a Lewis Freestone cross to show for their efforts.

Matthew Stevens was superbly denied by the Diamonds goalkeeper while Harry Baldry and Joe Gormley were also denied by the shot-stopper.

The hosts equalised on the stroke of half-time through Sam Brown's well directed strike. Posh were forced into a change inside the opening five minutes of the contest when Jack Payne limped out of proceedings and Aaron Hart also suffered an injury to disrupt the Posh plans.

AFC Rushden and Diamonds got themselves in front when Robbie Parsons converted from close-range after Dion-Curtis Henry could only parry the initial effort.

Posh levelled the scores midway through the second half when Lewis Freestone fired home a superb effort with his left-foot from an acute angle.

Stevens saw a goal chalked off for offside, Baldry saw an effort from long-range tipped over by the keeper and Gormley was a whisker away from scoring, but his effort grazed the outside of the post.

The home side converted all four of their penalties, while Aaron Williams and Glenn Ferrier saw their spot-kicks saved.

Posh XI: Henry, Connor, Freestone, Cartwright, H. Anderson, Payne (sub Ferrier), Hart (sub Noble), Baldry, Williams, Stevens, Gormley. Unused subs: Elsom, Fieldhouse, Stump.
