Shaquile Coulthirst penalty in vain as young Hammers seal 2-1 win.

Peterborough United continued their pre-season programme with a 2-1 defeat against a West Ham United XI at the ABAX Stadium with Shaquile Coulthirst's penalty kick not enough.

Coulthirst converted from the spot after he himself had been felled in the box to cancel out Jaanai Gordon's early strike for the Hammers who were lively throughout on a hot summers night. They secured a winner late on from the spot through the impressive Alex Pike.

The young visitors were in front inside 50 seconds as one-time Posh striker Jaanai GORDON collected a pass and fired low across Alnwick and into the bottom corner.

Alnwick was called upon to make a fine stop to deny Ford on eight minutes as the Hammers continued to threaten.

A nutmeg from Chettle started another good Posh move as Ferrier picked out Hughes at the back post but the former Newport County man fired over when well placed.

Coulthirst tested goalkeeper Trott with a deflected effort from range on 30 minutes after excellent approach play from the lively Chettle.

Anderson dispossessed Powell on 37 minutes and played in Coulthirst, but the former Tottenham man fired wide of the far post from a difficult angle.

Almeida Santos showed good power and pace to get into a decent crossing position down the right, his delivery was glanced over by Coulthirst.

Alnwick produced a decent stop to keep out a low drive from the lively Ford as the first half drew to a close.

Hughes whistled a fine effort just past the post moments before referee Darren Deadman blew for half-time.

Posh made three changes at the break with Gwion Edwards, Paul Taylor and Mark Tyler replacing Alnwick, Anderson and Ferrier.

Posh drew themselves level four minutes into the second period, COULTHIRST was upended in the box by Barrett and the striker coolly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way from the spot.

Grant McCann made seven changes just after the hour mark to give as many players in his squad a chance to get much needed fitness under their belts.

Taylor curled a free-kick wide of the target as Posh tried to find a winner. Posh lost the services of Almeida Santos to injury eight minutes from the end with Huw Alban Jones his replacement.

Right at the death, the visitors found a winner as PIKE stepped up from the spot to fire past Tyler after Kemp was felled in the box. Taylor saw a late effort cleared off the line and Forrester saw a shot blocked but it was not enough as the Hammers secured a notable win.
