Posh into round three of the Emirates FA Cup after dominant display against Luton Town.

Peterborough United secured their spot in the third round of the Emirates FA Cup after a dominant display against Luton Town at the ABAX Stadium.

Posh racked up an incredible amount of efforts on goal with former Posh goalkeeper Mark Tyler superb between the sticks for the Hatters but even he couldn't stop Conor Washington and Marcus Maddison from beating him.

Lee Angol was inches away from opening the scoring against his former club inside the opening few minutes as he met a low Jon Taylor cross, but his effort went wide of the near post.

Posh were forced into a change moments later with Jermaine Anderson replaced by Harry Beautyman in midfield. Anderson had slipped trying to reach a wayward pass and crumpled in a heap.

Oztumer cleared the crossbar with a speculative effort from distance before Elder was inches away from reaching an Elder cross, Tyler doing well to claim under pressure.

Angol fired wide of the near post after a strong run down the right by Washington on 11 minutes. Taylor tested Tyler with a low left-footed effort from the edge of the box as Posh continued to press.

The hosts created a glorious opening on 14 minutes as Elder picked out substitute Beautyman at the back post, but his first touch was heavy and Tyler was able to smother and make the save.

Graham Westley's men came close to breaking the deadlock on 16 minutes and if it had of been converted, it would have been talked about for many a year. A superb raking crossfield pass from Bostwick to Smith, his first time cross picked out Washington, but his shot was saved by Tyler.

Luke Wilkinson missed a glorious opportunity to give the Hatters the lead as he met a corner kick from the right unchallenged, but he powered his header over the bar.

Sean Long was cautioned on 27 minutes for a foul on Lee Angol as referee Mr Miller made his first award of a booking.

Tyler was well placed to claim a curler from Oztumer after good approach play from Angol and Beautyman as the game reached the half hour mark.

Olly Lee tested Alnwick with a fierce drive - the keeper doing well to beat the effort away from danger.

The deadlock was broken on 35 minutes and what a goal it was too, the in-form WASHINGTON exchanged passes from Elder and then cut inside to fire a stupendous shot into the top corner.

The goalscorer had a chance to make it 2-0 on 38 minutes after he was picked out by Oztumer, but the striker fired wide of the near post with the midfield man calling for a cut-back.

On 40 minutes, the Hatters and Craig Mackail-Smith in particular, had a glorious chance to level matters after he was played in by McQuoid, but the former Posh man struck the post with his fierce left-footed effort.

In stoppage time, Washington fired wide from an acute angle after a delightful reverse pass from Oztumer.

Posh were forced into a change at the break with Marcus Maddison replacing Taylor. On 54 minutes, Tyler was called upon to beat away a stinging drive from Angol from 25-yards.

Tyler was forced to deny Maddison on 58 minutes as the substitute showed great skill, pace and drive to force his way into the box and less than 60 seconds later the same pair were at it again, Tyler scooping the ball to safety.

Posh were literally inches away from a second on the hour mark as Oztumer picked out Washington with a clever reverse pass, but the striker scuffed his shot wide with Beautyman inches away from sliding in at the back post.

Oztumer was the next to squander an opportunity to score, firing wide after Smith had dummied a superb Beautyman centre from the right.

Angol planted a header wide of the target from a Smith centre on 68 minutes as again chances came and chances went.

Tyler was at it again on 75 minutes, denying Angol after a scooped pass through by Washington, the front man firing the rebound over on the half volley.

An Elder cross took a deflection moments later and again Tyler was there to palm the ball over the crossbar.

The second goal finally arrived with Posh's 31st shot of the encounter, substitute MADDISON collecting a pass in a wide area, he ran at the defender and then drilled a low shot across Tyler and into the back of the net.

Oztumer volleyed wide after a short corner kick routine on 85 minutes as Posh pushed for a third goal.
