Striker Conor Washington is raring to ahead of pre-season training and commented on the fixture release with Rochdale away first on the agenda.

The Peterborough United players return to London Road for pre-season training at the end of June in preparation for the new Sky Bet League One campaign and striker Conor Washington was as eager as anyone to find out the fixtures for the new season, which were released on Wednesday morning.

Posh travel to Rochdale on the opening day before home games with Milton Keynes Dons and Sheffield United. Washington admits his first thought was the trip to Gillingham for family reasons.

'At the end of the day you have to play everyone at some point, so it is not too exciting in that respect, but it is nice to know where you are going to be on certain days and everyone wants to know who you play on the opening day and we have got a tough start.

'I played Rochdale last season with Newport and they beat us 3-0 and were very good on that day, so it is a tough opening, particularly as they will be on the back of promotion.

'For family reasons, I was looking at Gillingham away and now I know when it is I can start getting family organised for that game. I think when the fixtures come out, everyone gets excited about what it is in store,' Washington said.

The former Newport County man had his first full season in the professional game last term and admits he was 'flagging' towards the end of the campaign. However, he has been working hard in the summer to hit the ground running for kick-off.

'It was a really intense season and I was flagging a bit towards the end of the campaign. It was the best year of my life and I am really excited about my first full season at the football club.

'It is always tough to move in January, but I think it will be great to get a full pre-season under my belt ahead of the new campaign.

'It is nice to have a bit of time off, but I have been spending a lot of time in the gym in preparation for the season. At Newport, it was tough in pre-season and I found it difficult, but I think that will stand me in good stead for this year.

'I want to have a good pre-season and get myself in the manager's plans. That is my first aim for the new season. I think myself and Britt Assombalonga were beginning to get a good partnership and if selected together, I am sure we can be successful,' Washington said.
